How to Backup Windows XP
Hard drives don't last forever, and trying to recover data from a hard drive is very expensive. You should always keep a backup of your computer. Having a backup will be very helpful when you need to re-install Windows. Even if your hard drive is ok, Windows system files can get corrupt and you will need to reinstall. Besides the countless amount of hours it takes to install Windows and all of the updates it requires; your pictures, personal documents and everything else that was on your computer can be gone. Save yourself the heartache and learn to use the backup software that comes with Windows XP.
What you need:
- An place to save your backup file. (You should not try to save a backup to the same hard drive where the information is located.)
- Second internal hard drive.
- External hard drive.
- Backup Utility for Windows:
- Windows XP Professional Edition has this preinstalled.
- Windows XP Home Edition has this on the install CD.
To Install from XP Home CD:
- Open the folder x:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP
- Run Ntbackup.msi and follow the install wizard.
Notes:
To open the Backup Utility for Windows:
- Click: Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Backup
- Or Click: Start -> Run then type 'ntbackup' and press Ok

Using the Backup Utility for Windows:
You have the option of either using the Wizard or the Advanced Mode. I will explain how to use the Wizard Mode for general users.
- First, Open the Backup Utility, then click "Next" to continue with the Wizard Mode.
- Select "Backup files and settings", since we are going to make a backup instead of restore a backup.
Click "Next" to continue.
- Then, select, "All information on this computer", to make a full backup of the computer. Or manually select which data to backup.
Click "Next" to continue.
- Next, you will select a location where the backup will be saved and name the backup file.
Click "Next" to continue.
- Finally, click "Finish" which will begin the backup process.
A small window will now appear displaying the progress of your backup. You can click "Close" after the the backup is complete.
